LASIK SURGERY
Lasik treatment is a procedure performed to treat focusing disorders. The Lasik treatment procedure begins with the numbing of the cornea located at the outermost part of the eye. A few drops of medication would be adequate for numbing. By this means, the patient suffers no pain during treatment. A thin flap is then removed from the transparent layer of the eye, and laser beam is applied to the layer. The flap is placed back in its place, and the procedure is ended.
This treatment takes about 2 to 3 minutes for each eye. After Lasik treatment, the patient does not need to stay in the hospital and can be discharged after an examination. During this process, the patient may experience certain problems such as pain, blurred vision, watering eye, and stinging sensation in the eyes for several hours. Anyone who has turned 18, and whose eye-glasses number has not changed in the last year, are a suitable candidate for Lasik treatment. If the patient wears contact lenses, he/she needs to stop wearing them several weeks before the lasik treatment. Lasik is a treatment procedure performed to treat myopia, astigmatism and hypermetropia. What is important in this treatment is the suitability of the eye structure rather than the eye-glasses number. It will be adequate to use medications for a week after the Lasik treatment. You should protect your eyes from water contact and wear appropriate sunglasses more frequently for a period of a month after the operation.
How is the lasik procedure performed? Will I feel pain?
A thin flap is lifted from the top of the cornea layer, and then laser is applied to the layer to correct the defects, and then the flap is placed back in its place. You will feel no pain during the operation, thanks to anesthetic drops to be applied to your eyes. The eyelids will be kept open during the operation, by means of lid openers. Since you will not be able to see the laser beam at that moment, you will be asked to look at the red light. You will feel no discomfort or pain in your healing process after the operation.
What is the appropriate age range for laser treatment?
This treatment procedure is not performed on people under 18 years of age. The lower age limit is 18 but there is no upper age limit. However, as age progresses, you will need to have eye examinations to know if this treatment is suitable for you.
How long does a lasik surgery take? Does bleeding occur during surgery?
Lasik surgery takes about 2 to 3 minutes for each eye. The surgery will involve no difficulty because it will last too short. Since the veinless cornea layer of the eye will be operated, bleeding will not occur. You will feel no pain because the procedure will be performed under anesthesia. However, you may experience pain, eye watering and stinging sensation in the eye for a period of 5 to 6 hours after surgery.
Would it be risky to move my head and eyes during the lasik operation?
Moving your head and eyes during the operation will pose no risk. The most important feature of lasik operation is its ability to ensure your safety at the highest level, by means of its eye tracking system. This is because our eyes will move unintentionally, no matter how we will be careful not to move them. For achieving this, the eye needs to be precisely centered. Even if your eye then moves, the laser beam will move in the same direction. When you move also your head with your eye, the procedure will be stopped. Once your doctor properly positions your head, the procedure will resume.
What will I experience after lasik treatment? What are the points to take into consideration?
Because your eyes will not be covered with bandages after lasik treatment, you will be able to be discharged the same day. If you apply the eye drops regularly and do not touch your eyes in the first postoperative 24 hours, you will recover very quickly. It is normal to feel a mild pain, stinging sensation and watering in the eyes for a few hours after the operation. Once you get through this process, you can get back to you your daily life, and can go to work the next day. Wearing sunglasses more carefully after the operation will protect you against the sun’s rays.
